VAN MORRISON COVERS JOHN LEE HOOKER’S “DIMPLES” ON THE PROPHET SPEAKS
Van Morrison’s latest album, The Prophet Speaks, his 40 th studio album, features new songs alongside his take on a series of blues, R&B and jazz covers, including a swinging version of John Lee Hooker’s, “Dimples.” Originally released in 1956 on Chicago’s legendary Vee-Jay label, “Dimples” is one of John Lee Hooker’s best-known tracks and an acknowledged blues classic. Morrison’s new version smolders with all the measured intensity of the original, punctuated by a grooving solo by organist Joey DeFrancesco. Morrison recently said of the new album, “It was important for me to get back to recording new music as well as doing some of the blues material that has inspired me from the beginning.” The pairs recording friendship dates back to John Lee Hooker’s 1972 album Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive and continued on 1991’s Grammy® nominated Mr. Lucky.
