United Sound Systems, Detroit Studio Where John Lee Hooker Recorded “Boogie Chillen’”, To Be Relocated



The Michigan Department of Transportation has taken a major step to preserve the musical heritage of Detroit by purchasing the legendary United Sound Systems studio.  The plan is to physically move the entire building to a new location. United Sound Systems plays an integral part in blues history for being the studio where John Lee Hooker cut his first #1 record, the immortal, “Boogie Chillen’”.  Cut in 1948 “Boogie Chillen’” was John Lee Hooker’s debut record release and also his first break out hit. Released on the Modern label “Boogie Chillen’” is a solo performance featuring only Hooker’s voice, his hypnotic electric guitar and rhythmic foot stomping.  Cub Coda called the guitar phrase from “Boogie Chillen’”, “the riff that launched a thousand songs.”
